Brief Introduction

  As the only national academic journal on the urban planning theory and practice overseas in China, Journal of Urban Planning International is now run by China Academy of Urban Planning and Design under the Ministry of Construction, PRC. It is the core journal of China’s architecture and science domain. 

  The predecessor of UPI was “Urban Planning Research” founded in 1979 by Urban Planning Research Institute under Bureau of Municipal and Rural Construction and changed its name to “Urban Planning Overseas” in 1986. It officially changed its name to “Urban Planning International” in 2007.

  Since founded over 30 years ago, UPI has published a large number of papers of translating, editing and reviewing the theory and practice of foreign urban planning. In recent years, the focus of papers gradually extended to an in-depth interpretation and comparative studies of theory and practice of urban planning at home and abroad, as well as in-depth discussion on the forefront and hot issues of theory and practice of urban planning in China. It is a main window for China planning community to understand world planning dynamics, and a platform to explore Chinese urban planning theory and practice paradigm on the basis of absorbing and digesting the international experience. UPI enjoys an important position in the domestic urban planning and research field, as well as an indispensable journal for the research and design institutions, which has very high literature value. In recent years, its international influence has gradually expanded.     

   The Journal is bimonthly, format 16K with 142 pages. It is published 19th the very last month. International Publishing Number: ISSN 1673-9493; Serial Publishing Number: CN11-5583/TU. It is distributed home and abroad with distribution code of 82-363. 

Aim, Concept and Feature

     UPI dedicates to creating a channel for Chinese urban planners to communicate with the world and focusing on the advanced world academics and practices combined with the Chinese urban development progress. It builds up a platform for the comparison of research home and abroad and promotes the discussion on China paradigm. Its aims are thorough perspective, constructive promotion and diverse exchange, establishing a bridge for Chinese planners to communicate with the world. It is an internationalized academic journal. 

 

Status 

  UPI was selected as the 2008-2009 source journal of “Chinese Social Science Citation Index” (CSSCI); In June 2008, it was selected in “Chinese Scientific and Technical Paper Citation” (Chinese Sci-tech Core Journals); In December 2008, it was selected in “Chinese Core Journals). UPI won the Excellent Prize of the National Constructive Science Information in 1998 and it’s one of the best Journals under the Ministry in the successive years. It is so far stored by a number of libraries such as Chinese Edition Library, China National Library and China Association of Periodicals. Since 1994, its CDs were embodied by the National Torch Projects as the nationally key products in Chinese Academic Journal Citation and Evaluation Database and China Journal Net (Chinese Academic Journal [CD]). 

Content

  The Journal covers mainly the theories, methods, design and practice in terms of foreign urban planning as well as the pioneer and basic issues of domestic urban planning field. It also provides latest information across the world. 

    It is characterized by the columns like the Key Articles, Urban Study, Planning Research, Practice Remarks, Book Review, Exclusive Interview and Resources Base. Resources Base gathers various latest dynamics, such as “Briefs External”, “Briefs Internal”, “Journals Digest”, “New Books” , “Topic Focus” and “Cases”. 

 

Readers

   The targeted readers of the Journal consists of professionals in the urban planning community and relative fields, including teaching staff, students and researchers from the concerned higher learning institutes as well as administrative staffs in the governing departments and the people working in the urban construction and planning, regional planning, urban design and landscape design fields.

 

 

Memorabilia of Urban Planning International

1979   ● Urban Planning Study (the predecessor of Urban Planning International) was published. It was an internal publication sponsored by the State City Construction General Bureau’s Urban Planning and Design Institute (the predecessor of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design). ● The Editorial Directors                        

were Jin Jingyuan and Wu Chun. The editorial staffs were Jin Jingyuan, Shi Chengqiu, Wu Chun, He Lin and Wang Hong.

1983   ● The sponsor of Urban Planning Study was renamed as China Academy of Urban Planning and Design. 

1986   ● Urban Planning Study was renamed as Urban Planning Overseas, and changed to a quarterly. The Editor-in-Chief was Xia Zonggan. The Editoral Directors were Wu Chun and Cao Xinxin. The editorial staffs were Wu Chun, Ni Boyun, Han Wenyan, Li Fang, Cao Xinxin and Gao Jian.  

1988   ● The third edition of Urban Planning Overseas obtained the Domestic Uniform Issue Code. 

1989   ● From the second edition of Urban Planning Overseas, the journal could be subscribed through the post offices nation wide. 

1996   ● Urban Planning Overseas established the first session of the Editorial Board with the Editor-in-Chief Xia Zonggan. The information column of “Window of Overseas Journals” was launched at the fourth edition. ● The editorial staff adjusted to Cao Xinxin and Gao Jian. 

1997   ● Urban Planning Overseas began to adopt the format of “Theme + Column” papers.  

1998   ● Uran Planning Overseas undertook the publication of the Chinese version of the global urban magazine Urban Age, a seasonal one. Up to 1999, the total issue of the publication was four. 

1999   ● The journal’s format was revised to large sixteenmo, and the information column of “Overseas Express” was launched. ● From the second edition, the journal obtained the advertising business license.  

2001   ● The journal was revised to bimonthly and won the 2001 Award for Outstanding Journal by the Ministry of Construction, PRC. 

2003   ● The journal established the column of “Resource Base”, which provided the dynamic, timely, comprehensive information on the international cities and urban planning profession. ● The editorial staff adjusted to Cao Xinxin, Sun Zhitao and Wang Ze. 

2004   ● The journal adjusted its columns, introducing personal collected works and city-themed section. 

2005   ● The liaison offices abroad were set up and the website of the journal was open in August. 

2006   ● The second session of Urban Planning Overseas Editorial Board was established, with the Editor-in-Chief Wang Jingxia, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Wang Kai and Qin Fengxia. On September 8, the first working meeting was held in Beijing.● The new system of peer review of the papers was established. ● Also the DVD format of Urban Planning Overseas (1996-2005) was officially published.

2007   ● Urban Planning Overseas was renamed as Urban Planning International.   ● From Nov. 1~2, “Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning of China Association of City Planning” held “2007 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International Editorial Board”, with the theme of “Update Planning Concept and Build Harmonious Community”. At the same time, the journal held the second working meeting of the Second Session of Editorial Board. ● For the first time, the journal attended the “Jin Jingchang China Urban Planning Excellent Papers Award”. 

2008   ● The journal set up an editorial working system, further standardized the management of papers and expanded the reviewer database.  ● The journal was included as “Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI) source journals (2008-2009)” (certificated in December, 2007), “Source Journal for Chinese Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations” (certificated in June, 2008), “Core Journal of China”(certificated in December, 2008) and“RCCSE Authoritative Journals and Core Journals”(certificated in June, 2008).   ● From Nov. 21~22, the journal, together with “Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning of China Association of City Planning”, jointly held “2008 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International Editorial Board”, with the  theme of “China’s Three Decades of Urban Planning in a Global Perspective”. At the same time, the journal held the third working meeting of the Second Session of Editorial Board.   ● The editorial staffs were Cao Xinxin, Sun Zhitao, Xu Mei, Wang Feng and Wang Yi. 

2009   ● The first supplement issue was published in October this year since the journal was    founded in 1979.● From December 4-6, 2009 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International was held in Chongqing in collaboration with the CAPUD’s Academic Committee of Foreign Studies. The theme of the Symposium was “Crossover and Integration:        ● The Transformation of Urban Planning”. At the same time, the Fourth Working Meeting of Second Session of Editorial Board of UPI was held. ● The editorial staffs were Sun Zhitao, Kou Yongxia, Xu Mei, Wang Feng and Wang Yi. 

2010   ● In March, “Polycentric Metropolis, Learning from Mega-city Regions in Europe” was   published by China Architecture & Building Press, which was translated and edited by the editorial board. ● On the Fourth edition, the newly revised “Journals’ Digest” and new column of “New Books” was launched .● The First Working Meeting of the Third Session of Editorial Board of UPI was held on December 2, which was presided by Wang Kai.● From December 3-5, 2010 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International was held in Shenzhen in collaboration with the CAPUD’s Academic Committee of Foreign Studies. ● The theme of the Symposium was “Urban Development and  ● Planning: China Paradigm under the Global Perspective”.    

2011   ● Starting from the first edition, the journal was comprehensively revised.● In March, “Preferred Publishing” agreement was signed with www.cnki.net● In April, Sina Microblog and blog of the journal were opened.● On November 3, the Second Working Meeting of the Third Session of Editorial Board of UPI was held, which was presided by Wang Jingxia. ● From November 4-6, 2011 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International was held in Tianjin. The theme of the Symposium was “Linkage of Old and New with Coordinated Development”. 

2012   ● In mid-June, the editorial department began to prepare for the publishing of bilingual book entitled “The Selections of Urban Planning International” . ● On November 1, the Third Working Meeting of the Third Session of Editorial Board of UPI was held, which was presided by Wang Kai. ● From November 2-4, 2012 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International was held in Hangzhou. The theme of the Symposium was “Urban Planning and Quality of Life”. 

2013   ● In February, the journal launched soliciting essay notice “What kind of Urbanization We Need” via microblog for the first time.  ● In June, “Editorial Workflow” started to operate. ● The third issue was the first attempt to combine traditional paper media with modern network and published selected essays under the theme of “What kind of Urbanization We Need”. Some authors’ videos of recording a lecture were published on the journal via 2-D Barcodes, which can be scanned and entered into the video viewing.  ● In August, the digital editing platform of the journal was formally launched.  ● In September, the editorial staff was adjusted to Sun Zhitao, Xu Mei, Wang Feng, Zhang Yixian, and Wang Yi. ● In October, the journal released soliciting essay notice under the theme of “Rural-urban Fringe” via microblog for the first time.  ● On November 28, the Fourth Working Meeting of the Third Session of Editorial Board of UPI was held, which was presided by Wang Kai.  ● From November 28-30, 2013 Symposium of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & the Journal of Urban Planning International was held in Wuhan. The theme of the Symposium was “Urban and Regional Development in the Global Networks”.

2014   ● In April, the journal tried with the format of “an exclusive paper + themed papers + column papers” from the second issue. ● In September, the new version of our website began its operation, which embedded the platforms such as editorial office system, subscription system and conference system etc. ● In October, the bilingual book titled “The Selections of Urban Planning International” was officially published, which was, to a certain extent, a complementary to the bilingual collected works in  ● Chinese urban planning professions. It has two volumes, 16mo format and 965 pages in total. ● In November, The Editorial Board of UPI completed its transition to the Fourth Session. Editor-in-chief is Wang Jingxia, Deputy Editors-in-chief are Wang Kai and Qing Fengxia. On November 27, the First Working Meeting of the Fourth Session of Editorial Board of UPI was held in Nanjing University.  ● From November 28-30, the 2014 Annual Conference of Academic Committee of Foreign Studies in Urban Planning & Editorial Board of Journal of Urban Planning International Nanjing University- ● University Paris-Est the Fourth Sino-French Urban, Regional and Planning Symposium was held in Nanjing University. The theme of the Symposium was “Development and Planning of the County Under the New Perspective of Urbanization”.
