Abstract:

Australia provides some different perspectives on the evolution of mega-city region development. Residential extension along freeways, the incorporation of ocean-frontage tourist regions, and the links to depressed industrial regions are the key drivers of Australian mega-city regions. The spillover of manufacturing, so prominent in Asian city-regions, is not a significant influence. This paper provides an understanding of the Australian mega -city regions by discussing their position in the settlement system, their spatial structure, and their development challenges and planning solutions.
